Well, for my 8 year old searching "lamented" for his vocabulary words....
Well, for my 8 year old searching "lamented" for his vocabulary words....
This is supposedly a childrens dictionary yet when I installed it and randomly typed in the word duck, it offers other possible words like f#ck , $uck, and so forth. Thank goodness I found this out before I gave this to my granddaughter. I would have hunted down The idiots who put this app out with out checking it out first. This is NOT a childrens dictionary. BEWARE!!!!!!!
This app is terrible! I cant even understand it and u can type in all the cuss words! Not for kids!
This dictionary looked great and has words in it which many childrens dictionaries dont think to include which is wonderful. However, when we were testing it out to put on iPads for our elementary students, we found a problem. The images for most words were appropriate and helpful but when we looked up Maid we were appalled to find a picture of a woman dressed in a sexy maid costume rather than a true representation of a maid past or present. In the year 2014 do people still not understand how self image effects individuals and our society as a whole? There is no need for this; there are so many other choices! Please review your images and take out what is not appropriate for children if you want to call this is a dictionary for Kids!!
Not appropriate for younger kids
At first it was a little confusing, but then I figured out how to use it, and I like it because of the pictures and the flash cards.
Ive been looking for kids dictionary to define things in simple words for my small children. On our first day using this my 6yo wanted to define trampled. Under the image section was real picture of a baby being trampled. Literally. A person standing on a baby. I was horrified. I understand that this uses Google image search so they dont have control over what picture is shown but perhaps incorporating Google Images may be a good idea in theory, not in practice. The kids and I often use Google Images and have to skip over scantily clad women in provocative poses that turn up under seemingly unrelated, perfectly innocent, searches. Im no prude so I just try to strategically avoid them. But Google is not an app for children, this is. If youre going to let your kids use this, make sure theyre supervised. Id rather delete it and keep looking for an app they can use without me checking everything before they look at it.
I reviewed this for use in my classroom of second graders. I tested the words sex and porn. Theyre in there! With explanations! I thought this was for KIDS.
The word is still in there with a graphic picture! PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP
As an app developer I have no idea how the obvious age inappropriate oversights in this app went unnoticed not only by the developer, but also by Apple! The fact that the pictures are pulled in from the web should have prevented it from having a kid-friendly rating. How many parents would approve of their kids searching for images on Google for ANY word they want? This app should be pulled ASAP!
Simply put, AWESOME!!! I have the free but will pay for no ads just because it deserves to be paid for! Wish I could say the same for all apps in the world!
Descriptions bring up Google images with a link to get more images. Something as simple as the word "crack" defaults to an image of crack cocaine.
This helped my second grader with her homework. Thank you
I specifically chose this app as a child-friendly resource. Within the first five minutes of use, one of my second graders searched for the word "statue." Included with the definition was a photo of the statue David in its full glory. While I appreciate the artistic merit of this classic, as a teacher I am responsible for considering the standards of all my families. I expected the makers of this app would check their sources and not let this dictionary automatically populate an entry with photos. This app is NOT for elementary aged children.
Beware, this app is not for children! My 7 year old daughter saw a picture of a naked woman when she looked up the word "grooming". The app pulls from google images to provide a picture with each vocabulary word.
If you think one is inappropriate push more images at the bottom of the picture then you select a more appropriate picture
